Slick, minimalist R&B reigns supreme on this ‘90s-inspired debut EP from Janine “and the Mixtape” Foster. Swapping Auckland for NYC, the New Zealand-born singer bedded down in Brooklyn to craft this self-produced outing, opting for an uncluttered formula of downtempo beats and spindling trap hi-hats stretched across cool, expansive synths. The result is an airy, Timbaland and Missy-inspired collection of silvery, falsetto waft (“Let It Run”) and throatier urban ballads loaded with sweet melancholy (“Dark Mind”, “Little Bit”).
