Apple Music Home Session: alt-J

On alt-J’s fourth album, The Dream, the Leeds-formed art-rock adventurers deliberately leant into the sound of The Beatles for “Philadelphia”—a story of someone’s dying moments in an alleyway. For this Home Session, they further explore that sonic influence—and a much less sinister sense of drifting away—by covering the Fab Four’s 1969 lullaby “Golden Slumbers”. “As a band, we were all entranced by Peter Jackson’s The Beatles: Get Back documentary, and we were quite inspired by the band during the making of The Dream,” keyboardist Gus Unger-Hamilton tells Apple Music. “So, we thought it would be nice to pay tribute to the band by covering one of their songs.” The trio also share new versions of “U&ME” and “Hard Drive Gold” here. Both songs first appeared as singles taken from The Dream, a rich and intrepid album that benefitted from the band having the time to really examine and finesse their ideas. “The cycle of lockdowns slowed down our recording process quite a lot, which turned out to be a good thing,” says Unger-Hamilton. “In the future, we won’t set ourselves deadlines but will take as long as we need to make the best record we can.”
