One of reggaetón’s most celebrated, Nicky Jam enjoys a rarefied space in this music’s history and legacy. A multi-decade veteran, he began his tenure as a rapper near the outset of the genre’s infancy, soon helming underground classics both solo and in the duo Los Cangris with fellow icon Daddy Yankee. Following a pivotal move to Colombia in the mid-2000s, his comeback season properly kicked off some years later when 2014’s “Travesuras” became a massive hit. From there, he’s been unstoppable, with major singles like “Hasta el Amanecer” and the J Balvin collab “X” making him one of reggaetón’s reigning champs. Having dealt with and spoken about past troubles on and around 2019’s Íntimo, Nicky Jam uses his subsequent album Infinity as more of a celebration. His sex-positive outlook bursts through on songs like “Te Invito” and the enchanting “Te Hace Falta.” Arguably more so than ever, he fully embodies the romantic side of the genre here, playing up lovelorn regrets on the coercive “Miami” and exuding heartfelt emotionality alongside Romeo Santos on “Fan de Tus Fotos.” Joining him for these dembow-driven escapades is a stellar set of guests, including Jhay Cortez on the perreo-ready opener “Magnum” and El Alfa on the hypnotic “Pikete.” Read more about some of his favorite Infinity tracks, in his own words, below. “Magnum” “It is a song that’s very explosive, that makes you dance instantly. It has the essence of what reggaetón perreo is, with a modern sound fused by its producer Jorge Milliano.” “Playa” “This song was written during the quarantine, using the expression that ‘el día esta pa’ playa,’ [meaning] that we all want to leave the house to sunbathe and be on the beach to enjoy the time after being isolated for so long.” “Celosa” “It describes a toxic relationship between couples that, after a long time together, turns into jealousy after a separation.” “Se De y Se Da” “This song tells a story of a couple who had problems in their relationship and they fixed it with one intimate night.” “Pikete” “It means to have a lot of ‘flow,’ to have your own striking sense of style when you go out—to the street, to the club, to the party—and stand out from the crowd because you have yours.” Fan de Tus Fotos “The title says it all: an obsession of a love at first sight, with wishes of many passionate nights from a couple that both end up in love.”
