After making 2013’s Baptized alone with a selection of producers, Chris Daughtry returns to recording with his full band. The effect is to remove some of his previous album’s electronic dressing without jettisoning its melodic chops and ambitious, eclectic spirit. Daughtry’s voice glides from a tender ache to a roar across elemental rock grooves (“Stuff of Legends”), aching ballads (“As You Are”) and, on “Back in Time”, a dash of electro-blues. The effervescence of the arena-sized choruses is matched by Daughtry’s increasingly positive outlook, with the singer’s defiance shining through “White Flag”: “I lost who I was lingering in the dark… I won't surrender, pray the Lord my soul to take/Thank God, I live to die another day.”
