Album i fokus
- Led Zeppelins mest ambitiösa album paraderar alla deras sidor. Men till skillnad från tidigare handlade det mer om att omfamna en eller ett par stilar i taget. Det här är ett mäktigt dubbelalbum med åtta nya och sju outgivna låtar, varav In My Time of Dying är ett 11-minuter långt bluesigt maratonlopp. Kashmir med sina ikoniska riff är fortfarande en rockradio-favorit, men många brukar även lyfta fram de lugnare numren. ”Physical Graffiti” var det sista klassiska Zeppelin-albumet och en kreativ triumf.
- Led Zeppelin fick höra att det var kommersiellt vansinne att inte ha en riktig titel, ändå blev album nummer fyra ett av världens mest sålda. De fick också höra att man inte kan göra åttaminuterslåtar i tre akter. Men Stairway to Heaven blev en av tidernas största evergreens, och finns ofta med på listor över historiens bästa låtar. Som helhet är skivan en uppvisning av Page, Plant, Jones och Bonhams stora talang och bredd, från akustisk folkpop till rasande blues. Och varför har hårdrocksband slutat spela flöjt?
- På sin andra platta hade Led Zeppelin gjort sitt bästa för att skrämma bort 60-talet. Nu var det 1970 och de öppnade med samma kraftrecept. Immigrant Song är drivande, repetitiv och extremt tidig vikingmetal. Men i Bron-Y-Aur Stomp drar de ur sladdarna och åker ut på landet, utan att tappa sin dokumenterade känsla för spänning och mörker. På 70-talet var det fullt normalt att blanda hårdrock och folkmusik. Page, Plant & Co. behövde också bromsa in sin rusande zeppelinare en smula.
- Det som stundtals hade känts lite skevt på debuten från 1969 – brittisk bluesrock i ett långsammare, tyngre och mer högljutt format – kändes sömlöst bara åtta månader senare på Led Zeppelin II. Tiden på vägarna sken igenom, och flera låtar antingen uppstod eller utvecklades live. Andra (i synnerhet ”Whole Lotta Love”) återspeglade ett förhållande mellan bandmedlemmarna som gjorde musiken mer direkt, samtidigt som den tillät bandet att ta större, något märkligare risker. Led Zeppelins frikostiga lån från afroamerikansk blues har länge stötts och blötts, men verkligheten och arvet är komplext. När man lyssnar på Led Zeppelin II hör man unga brittiska män som absorberar blues, inte som progressiv posering utan som mystisk kunskap, lika trolsk som de keltiska inslagen i ”Thank You” eller de Tolkien-inspirerande visioner Jimmy Page kryddade ”Ramble On” med. Led Zeppelin II är ögonblicket då bandet listade ut hur de skulle få bluesbaserad rock att låta som någonting nydanande.
- Led Zeppelins debut överbryggade den gamla bluesrocken och den nya hårdrocken. De pushade Chicagobluesen så långt de kunde och omfamnade det mörka och hårda. Här kan man roa sig med att leta grundstenar till metal, särskilt i urladdningar som Dazed and Confused. Samtidigt hörs finstämda inslag som den akustiska balladen Babe I'm Gonna Leave You. Det hindrade inte kritiker från att skaka på huvudet åt denna nya ”extremmusik”. Samma kritiker skulle senare hylla skivan som den milstolpe den var.
