Strange Reign opens with precisely the kind of hustler anthem that fans would expect from Tech N9ne’s collaborative series: “Cold Piece of Work” is a tough, slyly paranoid ode to street life anchored by JL, whose flow cruises menacingly. After, all bets are off as the Strange Music stable serve up some of their more unusual tracks, including “Happen”, which playfully tucks Tech N9ne’s rapid-fire verses in old-school funk, and “Dangerous”, an R&B love jam shot through with distorted guitars and crisp, ’80s-kissed harmonies.
