Allday’s Ice Melters

Adelaide rapper Allday has always gone his own way, including a foray into heady dream pop. So it only makes sense that his winter-ready playlist would collate some of the most idiosyncratic yet accessible voices in hip-hop, from MF DOOM and Freddie Gibbs to Drake and Lil Wayne. Ice Spice and SZA make memorable appearances too, and Allday bookends these self-described “ice melters” with some of his own material. “I love pop music, so I gravitate to rap music that is warmer and toward the pop end of the spectrum,” he tells Apple Music. “These songs are ones I listen to in winter when walking to the train station. I’ve chosen mostly rap, with some R&B, dancehall and Afrobeat too.” Fire up the playlist now, and read on for some thoughts on a few key tracks. Dave, “Starlight” “This sample is so pretty, and Dave is one of the best rappers in the world.” MF DOOM, “One Beer” “MM..FOOD was my wake up/before school album as a teenager. There’s nothing like putting a bit of gel in the hair while listening to DOOM rhyme two things that nobody has ever thought of before.” Tems, “Damages” “Tems always picks surprising melodies, so you can listen to her over and over and never get bored.” Omar Apollo, “Endlessly” “Frank Ocean doesn’t put out enough music but Omar Apollo clearly listens to a lot of Frank Ocean, so he’s my substitute.”
