INSOMNIO

INSOMNIO

A central figure both in reggaetón’s origin story as well as its mainstream rise to global sonic superpower, Nicky Jam knows first-hand the long and tumultuous journey this music took to get to this point. A rare artist who balances the earned respect of legacy with a keenly contemporary understanding of the genre, the Puerto Rican American star has hardly left the scene since the mid- to late 2010s, participating in countless hits and timely collabs. Three years after the celebratory Infinity, his eighth studio album gives his restless energy another creative outlet. Its name acknowledging the late-night origins of the songs’ ideation, INSOMNIO turns scary hours into vibrant moments. Perreo opportunities obviously propagate here, particularly alongside Luar La L on “LA CYBER” and Ryan Castro on the rugged throwback “CHICOKIS”, yet he hardly settles on any one sound. The title track and his Beéle team-up “CALOR” burst with distinctly different tropical vibes, while “EXÓTICA” eases into Afrobeats chill and “BRAND NEW” goes for maximalist EDM impressions.
