Long before Beats in Space was on Apple Music Radio, host Tim Sweeney spent decades showcasing the best of underground electronic music for anyone with a curious ear. But his contribution to Selects—the playlist in which DJs and producers share their favourite tracks of any given moment—takes a decidedly different tack. “I wanted my Selects playlist to focus on the roots of modern dance and electronic music,” he tells Apple Music. “The genres and music that influenced what you hear out at the club right now. That could be disco, New Wave, krautrock, funk, dub, rock—the list goes on.” To be clear, these are not the Kraftwerks, the Suicides or even the Princes you might expect to populate such a set. Rather, it’s a wide-ranging collection of non-electronic surprises, from Stevie Nicks’ propulsive “Edge of Seventeen” to The Temptations’ funky “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” to the actual Rolling Stones to the bouncing bassline of “Goodnight Tonight” from Paul McCartney’s Wings. “This playlist is for those older gems that I find and want to share,” Sweeney says.
