About Sir Mix-A-Lot
Seattle hip-hop pioneer Sir Mix-A-Lot secured his place in music history with the 1992 booty-worshipping novelty smash “Baby Got Back”. • After graduating high school in the early ’80s, Sir Mix-A-Lot began DJing at local parties and became a mainstay at the Rainier Vista Boys and Girls Club. • In 1983, he joined forces with fellow rapper Nasty Nes and local businessman Ed Locke to launch the label NastyMix. • Sir Mix-A-Lot’s 1988 debut album, Swass, yielded the minor hit “Posse on Broadway” and went platinum in 1990. • In 1991, Sir Mix-A-Lot signed to Rick Rubin’s Def American Recordings. The following year, he dropped “Baby Got Back”, off his major-label debut album, Mack Daddy. Thanks in part to its bootylicious music video, the single spent five weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance. • He took a six-year hiatus after 1996's Return of the Bumpasaurus but returned in 2003 with Daddy's Home. • “Baby Got Back” reentered the cultural discourse in 2014, when Nicki Minaj sampled the song for her single “Anaconda”, which earned a Grammy nomination and peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100.
