Sycco Essentials

“I want to do every genre in the book,” Sycco, aka Brisbane-born artist Sasha McLeod, tells Apple Music. As this Essentials playlist attests, the First Nations singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer is staying true to her word. Moving effortlessly between synth-pop (“Best Before”), dance (her cover of PNAU’s “Embrace”), neo-soul (“Tamed Grief”), R&B-tinged pop (“Swarm”) and drum ’n’ bass (“Ripple”), she also laces her compositions with dreamy psychedelia (“Starboard Square”), not surprising given her moniker is inspired by the word psychedelic. Her cover of Tame Impala’s “Lost in Yesterday”, meanwhile, is a nod to the psych-rock heroes, one of her biggest influences. McLeod also proves there are no boundaries when it comes to lyrical inspiration. “Nicotine” is a love song to her vape, “Dribble” is inspired by trying to make sense of the words a friend was saying in their sleep, “Best Before” takes its title from a bread expiry tag (but is more broadly about not running away from a new relationship) and “Happy You’re Here” is the first proper love song she ever wrote. Indeed, the only thing that’s certain with Sycco is that you never know what style of music you’re going to get—but it’s always going to be inventive, invigorating and utterly addictive.
