Well before he started mixing with Kanye, Drake and Jamie xx, Popcaan was already ascendant on the Jamaican dancehall scene. He came up as a protégé of gruff deejay Vybz Kartel; on the stutter-step riddim of 2010's “Clarks”, he provides the light loverman melody to balance out his mentor's growl, giving the song a refreshing buoyancy. But the way with a hook he demonstrates on his solo work, whether backed by the whinnying synths of “Only Man She Want” or the gentle electronic sway of “Everything Nice”, shows he's more than a keening accent piece.
