Polish Club Essentials

Considering all the noise they make, it’s pretty hard to believe Polish Club comprises just two people. The Sydney pair, who came together in 2014, are David Novak (guitar/vocals) and John-Henry Pajak (drums), and they specialise in riff-heavy garage rock that’s as fun as it is frenzied. The sound they’re known for—a collision of buzzsaw guitars, raucous vocals and propulsive drums—recalls classic heavy rock at the same time as sounding vital, fresh and modern. “Come Party” is a storming, frenetic celebration of the joys of unbridled hedonism, played at breakneck speed. Novak and Pajak have a gift for writing the kinds of tracks that sound tailor-made to those scenes in movies where the house party spills out of control—“Beat Up” is like a turbo-charged Royal Blood, and “Beeping” is reminiscent of the unabashed punk thrash of Andrew W.K. While making one heck of a racket might be their MO, there are other strings to Polish Club’s bow. “Able”, taken from their eponymous debut EP, is swampy, lo-fi blues rock, and on “Stop for a Minute”, the hard-rocking twosome demonstrate that they know how to pen radio-friendly pop anthems.
