Play School Essentials

Airing since the 1960s, Play School is a steadfast icon of Australian TV. Beyond encouraging young viewers to join in on educational activities, the show has shared exuberant music on a daily basis. Popular tunes like the inviting theme song (“Open wide/Come inside”) have inspired countless soundtrack albums, and the world-famous Bananas in Pyjamas even got their start as animated characters set to music on Play School. The show’s light takes on classic nursery rhymes and children’s standards are simple and sweet, maintaining a distinctive Aussie flavour on songs like “Walking in the Bush”. With so many generations growing up with these tunes, it’s no wonder that modern musical guests include everyone from indie rockers Dan Sultan and Missy Higgins to comedian Hamish Blake. Most appealing of all is the quirky interactivity, as heard on the frog-inspired “Der Glumph” and of course “Incy Wincy Spider”.
