Prior to becoming a solo artist, Dr G Yunupingu was a member of two iconic Aboriginal musical outfits, the groundbreaking Yothu Yindi and the celebrated Saltwater Band. Following the release of his debut solo album, 2008's Gurrumul, the blind singer/songwriter became an international cultural ambassador for his country and his ancient culture; he's performed at both the White House and Buckingham Palace. A folk singer by definition–he accompanies himself on an acoustic guitar strung for right-handers, although he plays it left-handed–Dr G Yunupingu primarily sings in his native tribal language of Yolngu. His voice is unlike anything else–somewhere between a perfect-pitched altar boy soprano and the sound of a breeze blowing over ancient desert sand.
