South Sydney rapper Chillinit may have already created a considerable buzz within the local underground scene, but Women Weed & Wordplay is the album that has thrusted him into the spotlight. He makes no secret of what he loves, nor of what the album’s about—it’s in the title—and he uses the latter to pay brazen homage to the former two. Much of the album is anchored by hyperactive bravado and heavy beats. But look a little deeper, and you’ll find the odd moment of intense personal reflection: “Inner Thoughts (Honesty)” is an honest account of addiction, isolation and a lost child. He’s also proudly true blue: Tracks aren’t just littered with Aussie references—from Hilltop Hoods to Don Bradman—but he also enlists a myriad local artists to help along the way, including Huskii, Wombat and Brisbane’s Nerve, who mixed and mastered the album. And he forges a UK partnership with Kamakaze, who features on the aptly titled “AUS2UK”.
