Dan Bejar’s eighth album as Destroyer finds him settling into a whimsical, melodic folk-pop mould after years of left-field stylistic detours. It’s a good look on him; the melancholy “Blue Flower / Blue Flame” is made all the more gorgeous by ornate guitar and piano flourishes that accompany Bejar’s twisting lyricism, while full-band songs like “My Favorite Year” balance luscious hooks with a loose, ramshackle feel. This majestic sense of poise makes Trouble in Dreams another satisfying, dreamy and confident entry from Bejar.
