Reneé Rapp not only stars as one of the titular mean girls in the musical remake of the 2004 movie, she makes her presence felt all over the soundtrack, lending her icy pop style to a number of the project’s songs. Elsewhere, Jaquel Spivey (who plays Damian Hubbard) duets with Auli‘i Cravalho (who plays Janis 'Imi'ike) on album opener “A Cautionary Tale”. The track is an emo-rock opus, with the two vocalists trading bars, asking questions like “How far would you go to be popular and hot?” Much like a soundtrack for a Broadway release, the joy of this Mean Girls collection is in hearing the actors from the film perform the songs featured in the movie. Elsewhere, though, is the album centrepiece—the Reneé Rapp and Megan Thee Stallion collaboration “Not My Fault”. That song was released before the soundtrack arrived, with Megan bragging that she’s “the Black Regina George”. “Not My Fault” samples a line of dialogue from the original Mean Girls movie and turns it into a funky, playful pop anthem. It’s a perfect accent for the film, but a strong enough track to inhabit its own universe, too.
