SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound

SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound

Perth’s Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have a clear goal in mind—to instantly grab your attention and then keep it for as long as possible. It’s a philosophy they stick to throughout SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound, the Perth quintet’s fourth album and the follow-up to 2019’s acclaimed And Now for the Whatchamacallit. Their heady brand of scuzzy garage rock is propelled by melodious, psychedelic riffs, channelling countrymates Tame Impala and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. Released on the band’s own What Reality? label, the album is packed with an energy that rarely drops, whether on the frantic “Tally-Ho”, the guitar hero shredding of “Mundungus” or the classic-rock throwback of “The Terrors”. Written during the extra downtime that the pandemic enforced, it’s an album concerned with the high-octane escapism that also characterises their intense stage presence. PPC frontman and songwriter Jack McEwan is open about his influences, citing a who’s who of rock heavyweights from prog heroes of the 1970s through to modern-day behemoths like Kings of Leon.
