Christina Aguilera’s seventh album combines the R&B-tinged pop that propelled her into the stratosphere with 21st-century flourishes. On “Make the World Move”, Aguilera and her fellow Voice coach CeeLo Green engage in call-and-response encouragement over horn-tinged clamour, the effervescent “Red Hot Kinda Love” allows her to play the flirt and the searing “Circles” punctuates her rebukes to her critics with edgy riffs. Lotus places Aguilera’s voice front and centre, but its detailed production and pop playfulness make it a triumph.
