Wollongong quartet The Vanns continue to hone their tight, combustible rock on their second album, with a satisfying balance between visceral anthems and close-quarters ballads. Singer/guitarist Jimmy Vann nails both briefs with his robust vocals, buoyed by anthemic group harmonies on the Gang of Youths-esque “Last of Your Kind” and evoking early Foo Fighters on “Haunted”. The influence of U2 comes through in lead guitarist Cameron Little’s textured melodies, too, but The Vanns settle just as comfortably into rootsy reflection on quieter tracks like “Silhouette”. Apart from some modest string arrangements, this streamlined affair leans into the band’s kinetic live show while propelling them from scrappy indie status towards the proper mainstream.
