Fancy Hagood serves up tunes as tasty as a late-night plate at Waffle House on Smothered, Covered & Fried, a collaborative covers EP featuring some of the singer-songwriter’s queer musical friends. Hagood opens the project with a solo cover of Fleetwood Mac’s classic “Landslide”, pairing his soulful voice with simple keys that gradually give way to a lush acoustic arrangement. She Returns From War and Jaime Wyatt join Hagood on the Pistol Annies’ signature “Hell on Heels”, making a meal of the track’s three-part harmonies and leaning into its sassier one-liners. TJ Osborne brings his rich baritone to the Shania Twain favorite “From This Moment On”, with the pair nailing the over-the-top theatrics the track builds to at its crescendo. The Taylor Swift-penned Little Big Town hit “Better Man” gets an assist from The Kentucky Gentlemen, whose brotherly harmonies do the famed vocal group justice. And Brooke Eden locks into the wildly infectious melody of the Eli Young Band hit “Even If It Breaks Your Heart”—originally written and performed by Will Hoge—showing the chart-topping tune works just as well as a duet.
