While she spent pretty much every waking moment of her childhood training her way to stardom in the dance world, it took just one homemade video to propel Calgary’s Tate McRae into the pop spotlight. That YouTube clip of her performing the simple piano/vocal ballad “One Day” set off a flurry of label interest and spurred a stack of often danceable, R&B-informed singles to trickle out between 2017 and 2020. Her debut EP, all the things i never said, collects a few of those songs alongside a couple new ones—each of them as intensely personal as the last. "I do not open up quickly to people, so my songwriting is definitely my way of expressing myself,” the 16-year-old singer/dancer tells Apple Music. "Once you get to know me, I am a very open book—extremely honest and straight-up, just like in my writing.” That’s made most obvious in tracks like “that way”, which explores the chemistry between two people who can’t act on their mutual attraction, and “stupid”, a silky jam about having an attachment to a toxic relationship. The tracks have deep meaning to their creator, but McRae still encourages listeners to derive their own significance from them. "I like for my songs to be able to be interpreted by anyone and put into their own life,” she says. “That’s why they’re so personal and real. My songs are like me—what you see is what you get.”
