Koonibba Rock

Koonibba Rock

Led by singer, songwriter and drummer Bunna Lawrie—now a proud Mirning elder—Coloured Stone increasingly combined traditional Indigenous instrumentation and songlines with Western rock and reggae sounds. The group helped to create a surge of interest in Indigenous Australian rock, along with acts like No Fixed Address and Warumpi Band. Named after the Koonibba Mission in South Australia, where the band formed, this groundbreaking 1984 debut album includes their enduring signature song. “Black Boy” became a radio success in Australia and nearby island countries like Fiji and Vanuatu, thanks to Lawrie’s rousing lyrics about taking pride in the colour of your skin, even in the face of systemic racism. Set to a frisky groove, it’s one of many upbeat standouts here, keeping close company with the joyous opener “Dancing in the Moonlight” and the more ominous “Afraid of the Dark”. Enlisting a changing cast of personnel, Lawrie has steered Coloured Stone through albums and tours into the 2010s and beyond, confirming the continued relevance of Koonibba Rock’s strong social messages.
