About Sevdaliza
Iranian-born singer Sevdaliza blends R&B and trip-hop into a ghostly sound pairing minimalist accompaniment with hypnotic vocals. • Though she was born in Tehran, Sevdaliza (a combination of Sevda Alizadeh, her first and last names) moved to the Netherlands when she was five. • As a teenager, she played for the Dutch national youth basketball team. She later completed a master’s degree in communication before focusing on music in her 20s. • Fluent in Farsi, Dutch, English, French and Portuguese, Sevdaliza primarily sang in English when she began releasing singles in 2013, collaborating with the Rotterdam producer Mucky. • Sevdaliza released a pair of EPs in 2015, The Suspended Kid and Children of Silk, and followed them with her first full length, ISON, in 2017. Her music often explores themes of womanhood and identity. • Also in 2017, shortly before the release of ISON, Sevdaliza released the Farsi single “Bebin”, a response to the Trump administration’s executive order banning travel to the United States from seven predominantly Muslim nations, including her native Iran. • Her 2020 sophomore LP, Shabrang, cracked the Top 40 of the Danish albums chart.
