It would always take compromise for this volatile group to re-form again. So while The Verve’s comeback is smattered with the stately rock and balladry that has been Richard Ashcroft’s solo currency (“Rather Be”, “Valium Skies”), his bandmates’ psychedelic impulses are well indulged too. Nick McCabe weaves heady textures throughout and his guitar sparks like an angle-grinder off the soulful shuffle of “Sit and Wonder”. “Love Is Noise” supercharges Ashcroft’s pop instincts into propulsive dance-rock, and cosmic garage-jam “Noise Epic” even reignites the lysergic ambition of their early EPs.
