RedHook Essentials

Since forming in 2017, RedHook have mingled metalcore, electro, pop and more into their vividly coloured, high-impact approach. While that might sound unwieldy on paper, the Sydney quartet makes it seem surprisingly natural. When firebrand vocalist Emmy Mack breaks into rapping on “Fake” or calls herself an “emo cliché” on “Sentimental Surgery”, there’s a refreshing immediacy to her sudden venting. And whether it’s the liberal lashings of EDM in PhaseOne’s remix of “Jabberwocky” or the ultra-clubby “Breaking Up With”—complete with surprise sax—the giddy head rush of electronics perfectly suits the band’s inherent theatrical streak. The same goes with their recurring integration of horror imagery, describing buried trauma on “Dead Walk” and an ex pushing for an unwanted romantic sequel on “Scream 2”. RedHook’s 2023 debut album, Postcard From a Living Hell, especially nails those metaphors, surveying the world around them with a sharp eye for dystopian possibilities.
