Chamber music, ambient textures and dance rhythms mix freely in Jon Hopkins' work, with wildly diverse results. “Lost In Thought”, from his 2001 debut, outfits trip-hop beats in sparkling acoustic textures, while on “Open Eye Signal” and other songs from 2013's Immunity, buzzing and scraping synths and drums balance the intricate sound design of classic IDM with the pulsing, linear grooves of progressive house. And while he can be earth-shakingly loud, as on “Collider”, some of his most affecting tracks are quiet, like the elegiac piano sketch “Small Memory”.
