Sydney alt-rock crew RedHook sharpen their talons on their compact but combustible second EP. Off With Your Head opens with lead singer Emily Mack’s blunt declaration “I’m angry” on the raging title track, before she vents over a mix of stop-start guitar riffs, fluttering breakbeats and sudden bouts of screaming. Yet bright melodies are never far from the forefront, as heard on the delicate synth opening of “Jabberwocky” and the sugary pop refrains contrasting with heavy distortion on “Low Budget Horror”. Jono Mata from Perth band Sly Withers joins the fray for “Soju”, a pop-punk anthem about the perils of trying to please everyone. After Mack advocates for expressing difficult feelings rather than suppressing them for the sake of decorum, the standout track caps with an empowering crowd sing-along captured at a gig.
