Produced entirely by indie rock icon Sufjan Stevens, John Legend’s first foray into children’s music has enough complexity to satisfy a full family of listeners. Originally inspired by his fans’ reaction to him playing piano for his children at home, Legend linked up with Stevens to create an album of classic and original kids’ tunes with bold arrangements. Take opener “We’re a Family”, which begins with delicate piano playing from Legend before orchestral flourishes reminiscent of Stevens’ chamber pop give the song a buoyant playfulness. “I love you, and you love me, and we’re a family,” John sings, before harmonies and percussive flair give the song its heft. Legend’s version of “You Are My Sunshine” is equally intoxicating, with little more than his melody, stirring harmonic support and delicate piano to convey the track’s timeless, all-ages beauty.
