Her Love Still Haunts Me Like a Ghost

In addition to being one of contemporary Christian music’s more fascinating figures, Montell Fish is also one of the genre’s most prolific. Her Love Still Haunts Me Like a Ghost is his second project of 2022, following the similarly understated album JAMIE, and Fish has hinted at more to come. On Ghost, Fish offers another batch of lo-fi, high-emotion songs, this time loosely grappling with a lost love. The soundscapes he builds remain sparse, with his reverbed vocals anchored by distorted guitars and industrial beats, recalling Bon Iver or Steve Lacy. “Hotel” plays with dynamics, growing louder and shrinking away as Fish tells a former lover, “Now you’re messing with me.” On “Exscape”, he longs to break free of a toxic relationship, his falsetto projecting a tender desperation. And closer “Bathroom” sounds like House of Balloons-era The Weeknd, with its slinky groove and sleazy vibe.
