Jungle have presented their music to the world through powerful, expressive movement since the release of their debut single, “Platoon”, in 2013—way back when the true identity of producers Josh Lloyd-Watson and Tom McFarland was a closely guarded secret. Featuring then-six-year-old dancer B-Girl Terra performing an impressive breakdancing routine against a white-curtained backdrop, the video that accompanied “Platoon” was the understated origin point from which the electronic duo’s visual identity evolved. Their 2014 breakthrough hit, “Busy Earnin’”, refreshed the concept by filling a similarly stark space with a crew of fully grown adult dancers; “House in LA”, released in 2018, gave it a new, slow-motion spin, atop a roof in Topanga Canyon; 2021’s “Truth” split the action, letting the camera pan back and forth across handfuls of dancers making the most of the limited space in distinctive, open-front rooms. Audiences are now catching wise to Jungle’s simple yet stunningly effective music videos, after some inspired recreations of the vibrantly theatrical choreography for “Back on 74” kick-started an infectious social media trend. Taken from the “motion picture” that supported their 2023 album Volcano, which seamlessly stitches together the individual videos for each song on the track list, “Back on 74” is just one of the highlights in an incredible showcase of talent, incorporating any number of styles and approaches, scored by Jungle’s carefree, neo-soul sounds.
