“I want to introduce the wider audience to the artists and warriors who broke down barriers and flew the flag in a very unforgiving time,” Noongar rapper Dallas Woods tells Apple Music, “while also shining light on the new blood who continue to carry the torch with pride, respect and staunch Blak energy. NAIDOC Week is a reminder of the strength and resilience of the oldest continuing culture in the world always was, always will be.” Both solo and as one third of the new supergroup 3%, Woods has always proudly represented his Country. The same is true of this playlist, featuring songs that run the gamut from groundbreaking First Nations acts to recent favourites, and some of his own songs, too. “I hope listeners feel the spirit of each artist and embrace the talent and gift each one holds from the last to the next generation,” Woods says. “We have survived and tell stories of survival in many different ways. Each song is a journey, so enjoy the ride.” Below, he highlights two key tracks on his playlist. Archie Roach, “Beggar Man” “I chose this song because Uncle Archie started the fire within me to follow my truth in music and continue storytelling in the best way I know how, with honesty and pride. This song still picks me up when my fire is low. Thank you, Uncle.” The Yabu Band, “Noongar Music” “This was a very personal pick as a proud Noongar man. This song is medicine. I just remember dancing with my mob, young and old, whenever this song played. I’m looking forward to going home to dance with it again.” The artwork on this playlist was created in collaboration with Noongar artist Janelle Burger. Apple acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land, culture and community. We pay our respects to Elders past and present.
