“‘Those Eyes’ is a very special song to us,” Kala Wita tells Apple Music of the first track on New West's exclusive Apple Music Home Session. “It's the song that really started this whole journey.” That journey technically began back in 2017, when Wita, Vella, Ben Key and Noel West formed their Toronto-based collective. But within a couple of years, they put out their debut EP, the soulful, acoustic-led Call Me When You Hear This Song, and its lead single sent their star into orbit. “It was the first song we wrote together, the first song we released. It was fun reimagining it in this way,” Wita says of the stripped-back take here. “It almost flips the meaning of the lyrics from being a song about falling in love to a song reminiscing on past love. We recorded this version one night while we were on a writing trip in Switzerland working on an upcoming project.” The band also cover a Goo Goo Dolls classic. “To us, ‘Iris’ is a perfect song, so it was a challenge to try and bring it into our world,” he adds. “It’s such a beautifully epic ballad, and we wanted to lean into the delicate aspects of that. Which led us to starting on the piano.”
