National Slate Museum Redevelopment
Respecting our past and looking to the future.
The National Slate Museum will be undergoing an exciting transformation from November 2024.
The redevelopment project will breathe new life into our much-loved Museum and will safeguard our spectacular historic buildings and globally important collections so that future generations can experience and enjoy the incredible story of slate.
There’s lots to be done, so we will temporarily close the Museum in November 2024 to carry out all conservation and renovation work safely and update the exhibitions and displays.
Things won’t stop whilst we’re closed! In 2025 we’ll be taking the museum on the road and, working with our partners, we’ll be ‘popping up’ in nearby places, from local attractions to community events.
We will re-open with an improved and revitalised museum experience in 2026.
The development will:
- Conserve and renovate the significant Grade 1 buildings and collections
- Improve the visitor experience, access and interpretation at National Slate Museum
- Create a hub for the UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Upgrade spaces which will enable us to share more of Amgueddfa Cymru’s diverse collections
- Place Environmental Sustainability at the heart of everything we do
- Involve people and communities in telling the story
- Enable more people from all backgrounds to learn, develop skills and be creative.
- Preserve and develop traditional skills related to the slate industry.
- Create opportunities to explore the museum digitally
