A significant renovation and expansion project is underway at the University of Richmond’s Boatwright Memorial Library — a learning hub and a community gathering space on campus for exchanging ideas and intellectual growth. The transformational project unfolding now will amplify and reimagine the resources and services available within the library for the Spider community.

Key components of the renovation include:

  • Creating new and inviting study spaces, including an enclosed atrium and increased natural light.
  • Making the building more accessible from the lake level.
  • Providing better access to key spaces within the library, including the Book Arts Studio, the Rare Books & Archival Collections, and the Lora Robins Gallery.
  • Planning space within the library to prepare for the future home of the new Carole and Marcus Weinstein Learning Center.
  • Relocating and expanding the existing café, creating an enjoyable space for members of our campus community to gather and exchange ideas.

The library has undergone several improvements over the past few years. The current renovation began in May 2023 and is scheduled to be completed in fall 2025.

The renovation primarily includes modifying space within the existing footprint of the library (currently 164,700 square feet). The project adds 7,500 square feet (increasing the total to 172,200 square feet).

The general contractor is Taylor and Parrish Construction out of Richmond, the architecture firm is Studio MB out of Washington, D.C., and the landscape architecture firm is Jonathan Ceci Landscape Architects.
