Coaching Rumors

Bradley Beal is averaging the most steals and blocks of his career so far (which, naturally, means he sports the highest Defensive Box Plus/Minus of his life by a mile). Phoenix lineups with Beal only give up 111.3 points per 100 possessions, a well above-average mark. NBA players do not usually see a massive defensive upswing in their 30s; defense is a younger man’s game, reliant upon quick-twitch athleticism and endurance. But Beal’s defense is far from a numbers-driven narrative. Coach Mike Budenholzer has deployed him as the starters’ point-of-attack defender.
What was initially a front office position, however, turned into an assistant coach spot on the Hawks’ staff under head coach Jacob Jackomas. “If I wanted to challenge myself, this was an opportunity to do it here,” Justin Tatum, 45, said. “I wanted to make sure it was OK with the head coach first. I didn’t want them to throw me on the staff and say, ‘Hey, you have to take this man.’ Me and the head coach talked it out and felt like it was a good opportunity for me to be here because I would be a mediator for the American players.”

Khris Middleton on injury status: I feel good, just not good enough to play

Neither Khris Middleton nor Bucks head coach Doc Rivers would put a timeline on his return to the court, but Rivers said again before the Bucks took on the Memphis Grizzlies that the three-time all-star is getting closer. “I feel good, just not good enough to play that’s all,” Middleton said, in his first comments since the Bucks opened training camp the first week of October. “That’s really all I can say at this point. And just working to get back on the court. I’m feeling better and better each day just not good enough to play yet.”
Walker doesn’t see coaching as a career, but will leave his mind open for that to change. Pritchard smiled when asked if he ever saw Walker coaching, saying Walker probably doesn’t need the money. The commitment suits him for now as he navigates retirement, which hasn’t brought any new interests or hobbies yet. He feels like God put him on Earth to be around basketball. “It’s been easy,” Walker said. “The people around here make my days easy, my life easy. I’m just having a good time, to be honest. I’m not thinking about, ‘damn I wish I played or lasted to this season.’ It’s pretty good.”
