Camera uploads is a feature that automatically uploads photos and videos from your mobile device to your MEGA Cloud drive.
If you enable camera uploads, the MEGA mobile app will create a “Camera Uploads” folder in your Cloud drive by default. You can rename it or change the target folder later on.
In the iOS app
Turn on Camera uploads
- Tap on your profile image at the top left.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Camera uploads.
- Tap the toggle switch to enable camera uploads.
Camera uploads options
Under the Camera uploads settings screen, you can find the following options:
Option | Details |

Upload videos | Tap on Upload videos to access the Video uploads settings screen. |
Save HEIC photos as | Defaults to JPG format. We recommend JPG, as it is the most compatible format for photos. |
MEGA camera uploads folder | Defaults to the “Camera Uploads” folder in your Cloud drive. Tap to change your cloud folder for camera uploads. |
Include location tags | Disabled by default. Enabling location data allows that data to be included in the file’s EXIF details and can be seen by downloading an image file and looking at the file properties. Please be conscious of privacy issues when sharing photos with location tags. |
Use mobile data | Disabled by default. If enabled, your mobile data will be used when there is no wi-fi connection available. |
Use mobile data for videos | Disabled by default. This option appears if you have enabled both Video uploads and Use mobile data. If enabled, your mobile data will be used if there is no wi-fi connection available. |
Advanced options
The following advanced options can be configured on the Camera uploads settings screen:

Upload videos for Live Photos | Enabled by default. The photo and video versions of each Live Photo will be uploaded. |
Upload all burst photos | Enabled by default. All the photos from your burst photo sequences will be uploaded. |
Upload Hidden album | Disabled by default. The Hidden album is where you hide photos or videos in your device’s Photos app. |
Upload shared albums | Disabled by default. Shared albums from your device’s Photos app will not be uploaded. |
Upload albums synced from iTunes | Disabled by default. Synced albums are where you sync photos or videos to your device’s Photos app from iTunes. |
Video uploads options
Enable video uploads by tapping the toggle switch on the Video uploads settings screen with the following options:

Video quality | These options become visible when H.264 is selected. It is a compression quality when HEVC videos are transcoded to H.264 format: Low – Maximum 480p Medium – Default quality, maximum 720p High – Maximum 1080p Original – Original quality |
Note
If the location of your Camera uploads folder is changed, it will sync automatically from all devices. Example: If you have two devices, both logged into the same MEGA account, and you change the MEGA “Camera Uploads” folder to a folder called “A” on one device, the other device will also upload files to folder “A”.
In the Android app
Turn on Camera uploads
- Tap on the main menu at the top left.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Camera uploads.
- Tap the toggle switch to enable camera uploads.
Camera uploads options
Under Camera uploads settings screen, you can find the following options:

How to upload | Defaults to Wi-Fi only. Tap to select: Wi-Fi only; Wi-Fi or mobile data |
Upload only while charging | Defaults to off. Uploads will pause until charging starts. Note that if the battery is below 20%, uploading will still be paused while charging until the battery level is above 20%. |
File upload | Defaults to photos only. Tap to select from the following options: Photos only Videos only Photos and videos |
Include location tags | Disabled by default. Enabling location data allows that data to be included in the file’s EXIF details and can be seen by downloading an image file and looking at the file properties. Please be conscious of privacy issues when sharing photos with location tags. |
Keep file names as in the device | Defaults to unchecked which means that all uploaded files will be named in the format YYYY-MM-dd HH.mm.ss. If checked, your files will retain the original name as shown in your device. |
Local camera folder | Defaults to /storage/emulated/0/DCIM. Tap to choose a different folder on your device. Camera uploads will then scan and upload photos and videos from the new location. |
MEGA Camera uploads folder | Defaults to the “Camera Uploads” folder in your Cloud drive. Tap to change your cloud folder for camera uploads. |
Enable secondary media uploads | You can set up another folder in your device to automatically upload to another folder in your Cloud drive. |
Video uploads options
If you set File upload to Videos only or Photos and videos you can see the following options:

Require me to actively charge my device | Only visible if you choose a Video quality setting other than Original. You can require the app to only upload files while the device is charging, if the original file size exceeds a specified limit. |
If videos are larger than | Only visible if you enable Require me to actively charge my device. You can require the app to notify you if the upload size exceeds the specified size (choose within the range 100 MB to 1000 MB). |
Secondary media uploads
After you enable the toggle for Enable secondary media uploads you can now see the following options:

Local secondary folder | No default set. Tap to select the local folder you want files uploaded from. |
MEGA secondary folder | Defaults to “Media Uploads” folder in your Cloud drive. Tap to change your cloud folder for media uploads. |

If the location of your secondary media uploads folder in the Cloud drive is changed, it will sync automatically from all devices. Example: If you have two devices, both logged into the same MEGA account, and you change the MEGA “Media Uploads” folder to a folder called “B” on one device, the other device will also upload files to folder “B”.
