Alaska’s Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

Denali KidCare is Medicaid coverage for children from birth through age 18 and Pregnant Women who meet income eligibility standards.

For children, Denali KidCare is typically issued for 12 months at a time. You will need to renew your case every 12 months to ensure there is not a break in coverage. Approximately 45 days before coverage ends, the division will send a renewal form to your household.

How to Apply

The fastest way to apply for Medicaid benefits is through www.healthcare.gov. Options are listed on our Medicaid page.

Individuals may also apply by:
  • Submitting an Application for Services (GEN 50C) via mail, fax, email, in-person/lobby drop box, direct secure messaging, or through a fee agent.
  • Contact the Virtual Contact Center 800-478-7778 (TDD/Alaska Relay: 7-1-1) and apply for benefits over the phone

Covered Services

For questions about covered services, recipients can refer to the Medicaid Recipient Handbook, or contact HMS (Healthcare Management Solutions)​ by calling the helpline at 800-770-5650, option 2, toll-free statewide Monday through Friday between 8:00am and 5:00pm.

Q: What is the federal Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)?
A: Alaska expanded our Medicaid program to cover additional categories of children in 1999. These CHIP categories provide Medicaid coverage to uninsured children up to age 19 in families with incomes too high to qualify them for Medicaid. CHIP information and state plans are available online at www.Medicaid.gov/CHIP.
