Outstanding Investigator Award (R35)
To provide long term support to an experienced investigator with an outstanding record of research productivity. This support is intended to encourage investigators to embark on long-term projects of unusual potential.
The Outstanding Investigator Award (R35) provides support for an investigator's research program or lab rather than discrete research projects with pre-defined specific aims. It is typically meant to provide primary (or sole) support for the research conducted by the investigator within the awarding institute or center (IC) mission and the awarding IC may restrict the ability for an investigator to serve as PD/PI on an R35 and other research awards concurrently.
The program vs. project approach facilitates several goals
- Stable funding to facilitate ambitious scientific projects and creative approaches
- Increased flexibility to pursue research directions as they arise
- Long-term support (some programs allow for project periods up to 7 years)
- Reduce time spent writing grant applications and managing multiple grant awards
The specific opportunities supported under the Outstanding Investigator Award (R35) vary by IC.
