Consider changing use of `NIL` to `LPAREN`, `RPAREN`

From discussion on #157 

`NIL` in the SPARQL grammar now seems to make the grammar more complicated, not less, now it might be in different places.

This issue is to investigate this separately from other work on the SPARQL grammar.
