What is the issue?

When using fast user switching in macOS (14) a notification is sent to the notification center which states, "An Error Occurred. Extension install issue detected. Ensure only one copy of Tailscale is installed, and reboot your Mac."

Screenshot 2024-06-03 at 12 52 36

This was replicated on macOS 14.5 with the MacApp Store version of Tailscale.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Ensure you have at least two user accounts on your macOS system.
  2. Ensure the Tailscale client is up and running and connected to your tailnet.
  3. Using Fast User Switching, swap to another account on your macOS system.
  4. Log out of the account you swapped to.
  5. Log back into the original account.
  6. Check your notification center and observe a new notification which says, "An Error Occurred. Extension install issue detected. Ensure only one copy of Tailscale is installed, and reboot your Mac."

Are there any recent changes that introduced the issue?

I'm not aware of any recent changes on my MacBook Pro or in the Tailscale client which would have caused these issues. It's also possible they existed previously.

Having the same message when switching user on macOS 14.5 and Tailscale 1.66.4 App Store. Additionally after switching to second user no internet connection anymore for any user until reboot. If after reboot doing first login with the second user -> no internet connection for any user.

The same message showed when I'm installing Tailscale on my AppleTV with tvOS 17.3.

@jimmybrancaccio is this still reproducing today on Sequoia? If so, please attach a macOS Configuration Report.
