Make russian accent real #33964
Comments
you mean in the character preferences? |
honestly i have a hard time understanding the russian accent as it presently is, and I'm not even visually impaired (to my knowledge) |
Currently, the "russian" accent is цияэдюдбгэ əдябдəэ (unreadable garbage). An idea floated around in the Discord is that it could instead be сумтинг ридабл (something readable) for those who can read cyrillic. However, due to not everyone knowing how to read cyrillic, that effect would need a client-side toggle for whether it's present at all! This should of course be combined with typical accent rules to capture some of the common quirks of Russian-English dialect (as is standard for accents), so that there's still some flavor left-over for those who leave it off. Ongoing efforts to refactor chat might make this feasible in the near-future, as currently the main blocker is the fact that all accents are processed entirely serverside (which is an issue for accessibility). Though of course, that's just one option of many ways to go about a Russian accent implementation that doesn't give cyrillic readers and non-cyrillic readers alike a headache. |
I believe it is, funny enough, readable to those who can't read cyrillc. But I can read too, so I can't really prove it |
I'm dyslexic and can read the unreadable garbage, in the example, almost as easily as non-cyrillic text. I assume the dyslexia is probably why. Assuming this is not the case for most people, it does seem silly to have an "accent" that is completely indecipherable for many players. However, switching it to true cyrillic for people who can read that, seems even more exclusive to understanding the player, which sort of defeats the point of a fun/rp gimmick like accents. I think it makes most sense to make it behave similarly to the other accents, if the unreadable garbage implementation is considered undesirable. |
What about to use transcription of some words from Cyrillic to Latin? This is "the golden mean", which is unlikely to be better than anything else. |
In the current moment, Russian accent (which can be achieved by equipping a hat with earflaps) simply replaces English letters with Russian that look similar. Instead, it should be made into a real accent
