SonicWall NetExtender

SonicWall NetExtender is a secure and efficient SSL VPN client designed to provide remote users with seamless and secure access to corporate networks. It allows employees, contractors, and remote workers to securely connect to their organization's network from virtually any location. As a part of SonicWall's suite of security solutions, NetExtender is widely used by businesses and enterprises to ensure secure communication and data protection for remote access.

Installation

Installing on Windows

  1. The installer launches automatically. Follow these steps:
    • Accept the License Agreement.
    • Choose the installation folder.
    • Select shortcut options and click Install.
  2. Once the installation is complete, launch NetExtender from the Start menu.
  3. Enter the SMA server IP, username, password, and domain.
  4. Click Connect to establish a connection.

Installing on Linux

  1. Download the NetExtender TGZ package from the SMA portal.

  2. Extract the package using the command:

    tar -zxf NetExtender.tgz
    
  3. Install NetExtender by navigating to the extracted directory and running:

    sudo ./install
    
  4. Launch NetExtender using the Applications menu or by running:

    netExtenderGui
    
  5. Enter the SMA server, username, password, and domain, then connect.

System Requirements

Windows Clients

  • Supported Operating Systems: Windows 10 (latest patches)

  • Browsers: Mozilla Firefox 16.0+, Google Chrome 22.0+

  • Administrator privileges for initial installation

Linux Clients

  • Supported Distributions:

    • Fedora 15+

    • Ubuntu 18.04+

    • OpenSUSE 10.3+

  • i386-compatible Linux kernel

Using NetExtender

Launching the Application

  • Windows: Start > All Programs > SonicWall NetExtender > NetExtender

  • Linux: Applications menu > Internet or Network > NetExtender

Disconnecting

  1. Right-click the NetExtender icon in the system tray.

  2. Select Disconnect.

Viewing Logs

  • Logs can be accessed from the NetExtender interface under the Log tab.

Configuring NetExtender

Proxy Configuration

NetExtender supports sessions using proxy configurations. To configure proxy settings:

  1. Open NetExtender and go to Properties > Proxy.

  2. Choose one of the following options:

    • Automatically detect settings (requires WPAD support).

    • Use an automatic configuration script (enter the script URL).

    • Manually configure the proxy server (enter the address, port, username, and password).

  3. Save the changes.

Advanced Settings

Customize advanced settings such as connection speed, packet capture, and data compression under the Advanced tab in the NetExtender Properties menu. Adjust these settings only as advised by SonicWall support.

Authentication Methods

NetExtender supports various authentication methods, including:

  • Two-factor authentication (e.g., RSA, Google, Duo).

  • SAML Authentication for single sign-on (SSO).

  • Certificate-based authentication (requires importing client certificates).

Troubleshooting

Common Issues

  • NetExtender Cannot Connect: Ensure that the SMA adapter is installed and check for any conflicting dial-up connections.

  • Installation Issues: Verify administrator privileges and ensure ActiveX is not blocked by the browser.

  • BSOD after Connection: Reinstall NetExtender and gather relevant logs for support.

Debugging Logs

  • Logs are stored at C:\Program Files\SonicWall\SSL VPN\NetExtender.

  • Use the Log Viewer in the application to analyze connection issues.
