We might be able to get a reasonable estimate of subject respiration from the phase data, based on Jaffray et al. (2024).

This method requires a fast TR ("TR must be shorter than half of the shortest respiration period") so we might need to check the TR against the expected breathing rate.

From the paper:

The mean of the respiratory period measured across all subjects using the proposed method was 4.79 seconds ± 1.6 seconds, and the mean measured with the breathing belt was 4.79 seconds ± 1.6 seconds.
