What happened?

I am trying to use gulp as frontend

What should've happened instead?

You need to use node 22:

cookiecutter-django/{{cookiecutter.project_slug}}/package.json

Lines 37 to 39 in b1bc92f

"engines": {
"node": "22.12"
},

That's the only version of node supported by this project. This a new syntax in v22: https://stackoverflow.com/a/79233558/2261637
