What I am requesting is for the roller to roll dice against a target number and return not just if it succeeded but by how much it went over or under. For example, something like "r/ 3d6 v12" or even better "r/ 3d6+2 v12" which would be 3d6 (+2 in the second example) vs the target number of 12, and which would give output like "14, Success! 2 Degrees of Success."
