Which data can be found out via an IP address?

  1. Internet Provider (ISP) Data: The IP address is associated with a specific ISP who may have more information about the customer and their Internet connection.
  2. Geographic location: The IP address can be used to estimate the geographic location of the device or network that uses that IP address.
  3. Network: The IP address also gives information about the network to which the device that uses this IP address belongs.
  4. Open ports: The IP address can also be used to determine open ports and services that are available on this device or network.
  5. Proxy: An IP address can also indicate whether a proxy server is used.
The geodata monitoring of users is particularly interesting when it comes to the topic of games, considering that they often create a complete user profile together with actions taken in addition to the IP address.

A single IP address without context is quite irrelevant, but this changes when it can be linked to other data such as  Metadata. The EU Court of Justice also ruled in 2017 (VI ZR 135/13) that IP addresses are to be interpreted as a personal characteristic.

  What is an IP?

The abbreviation "IP" (Internet Protocol) represents the address of the own device or a service in the network. The postal address, so to speak, that is always included. Whether a page is called up, a video is watched or an e-mail is opened.

The format consists of a 32-bit address which is divided into 4 blocks. Block 1 to 3 stand for the subnet, while the last block stands for the own device (connected routers, cell phones etc.) in the internal network.
