Hurricane Kirk forms in the Atlantic, expected to become major hurricane: NHC

ORLANDO, Fla. - Hurricane Kirk formed Tuesday afternoon in the eastern Atlantic, becoming the 11th named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

The National Hurricane Center said Hurricane Kirk was about 1,070 miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands with sustained winds of 75 mph, making it a Category 1 hurricane.

It is traveling northwest at 12 mph. The minimum central pressure is 986 mb.

Hurricane Kirk forms in Atlantic Ocean

Hurricane Kirk formed in the Central Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday. The Category 1 storm poses no immediate threat to land.

It is expected to continue moving west-northwestward over the next several days. It is expected to strengthen over the next 48 hours and is forecast to become a major hurricane – a Category 3 storm or stronger – by Thursday.

Hurricane Kirk formed Tuesday in the Atlantic and is expected to become a major hurricane. No direct impacts to the U.S. or Florida expected.

Kirk is expected to stay far east of the U.S. out in the Atlantic.

Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 30 miles, while tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 195 miles, the NHC said.
