Rural communities and small states have different needs and access to resources before, during and after disasters. The Small State and Rural Advocate works for the fair treatment of small states and rural communities.
We do this by:
- Ensuring these communities are represented in emergency management processes and programs.
- Counseling states on the emergency and major disaster declaration processes to ensure that the needs of rural communities are being addressed.
- Assisting states in the collection and presentation of materials to demonstrate severe localized impacts for a specific incident as part of a request for a disaster declaration.
Review case studies and best practices to see how rural communities and small states are working with FEMA to increase their recovery and resilience efforts.
